How to choose a ski resort

There is no "best resort" — only the resort that best answers your question.

1. How many days do you have?

This is the question that most determines resort choice, and most people ask it last. With one day, a big resort is uneconomic: travel time eats the skiing.

A rough rule: under 20 km of network suits a weekend, over 40 km suits a week. For a single day, network size barely matters — you will use a small part of it either way.

For a week the logic inverts: at a small resort you start repeating yourself after the third day.

2. What is your level?

For a beginner, resort size barely matters; in a first season you cannot use most of any network. Travel, cost and the freedom to cancel decide the day.

At intermediate level network size starts to count: more than half the runs open up and variety begins to matter.

For advanced skiers the number to read is not length but VERTICAL DROP. Long uninterrupted descents need a big elevation gap; a resort with 300 m of vertical means short runs however long its network.

3. Where are you starting from?

Turkish ski resorts split sharply by geography: high, reliable resorts in Eastern Anatolia and low, accessible ones in the west.

That creates a direct trade-off between distance and snow reliability. For someone starting in the west, proximity has to be weighed against the reliability the eastern resorts offer.

This site publishes no kilometres or travel times: they vary so much with traffic, season and route that a single figure would mislead. We give the region instead, and resorts can be grouped by it.

4. How much does snow reliability matter?

If you must fix dates months ahead — leave, tickets, accommodation — snow reliability is your first priority, and the number to read is the BASE elevation.

Where the base sits above 2,000 m the cover largely holds through the season. Between 1,300 and 1,600 m the pack works close to the freezing line and melts out several times.

If you can be flexible, that priority drops: fixing a week and choosing the day from conditions gives a high success rate even at a low resort.

Putting the four answers together

Answer the four and the list usually narrows to two or three. One day and starting from the west: Marmara and the western Black Sea. A week, with reliability mattering: Eastern Anatolia.

To decide among the remaining two or three, read the comparison table: vertical drop for advanced skiers, lift count for weekend crowds, base elevation for season reliability.

This site does not say which resort is better. Beyond sharpening your question and making comparison possible, we make no claim.
